Can I transport my Electric City Bikes on a bicycle roof rack or hitch mounted rear bike carrier rack?
We always recommend transporting your ebike on an approved rear hitch mounted bicycle carrier that is designed and rated for the total load being transported. Never transport an ebike without knowing if your bicycle carrier is designed for the load being transported.
As ebikes are typically heavier than most traditional bicycle carrier racks we suggest using only carrier racks such as the Thule EasyFold that are rated to safely transport electric bicycles.
⚠️ Always remove the battery from the ebike when transporting the bike(s) to reduce the total load on the carrier.
How far can I go per charge?
This is one of the most asked questions. There is no exact figure as there are simply to many variables.
Range will always be dependent on such factors as:
- Motor type
- Battery capacity
- Terrain
- Wind
- Temperature
- Total load on the ebike
- Tires
- and more
However, Bosch has created a state of the art range simulator that you can use to determine how far you can ride between charges by simply entering in some basic information about the bike, and what type of terrain you will be riding on.
For Shimano Steps systems and Mahle system there are many factors that will affect range. We suggest speaking with one of our ebike experts who can assist you.

Which eBike class do your Electric City Bikes fall under?
While the US class system is not recognized in Canada at the present time, all of our products fall under Class 1 (pedal assist) with a top speed of 32kph (20mph) under electric assist.
This essentially means that there are few if any restrictions on where you can use your ebike vs the Class 2 or Class 3 (not legal in Canada) bikes.
This Class system is not to be confused with the EU class system which differs from the North American terminology.
I've heard that rear hub motors are better than mid drive motors for Electric City Bikes. Is that true?
Ahhh yes this to is a question we hear a lot. In short we have extensive experience with both systems. We have sold thousands upon thousands of ebikes through the years and without tooting our own horn too much we consider ourselves industry experts. By far mid drive motors are the way to go if you want a safe, reliable and enjoyable human like riding experience.
Back when we started in 2010 hub motors were used on all our ebikes. It was the technology of the day. Around 2014-2015 Bosch powered ebikes started to make an appearance in North America. This is the time we started to see a shift in customer preference (and certainly ours) towards mid drive motors. Today mid drive motors power 99% of the ebikes we sell annually.
Not yet convinced?
OK we get it you may have been surfing the internet, visited an ebike shop claiming they make their own branded bikes or perhaps did a search on the internet and are now getting bombarded with ads claiming their products are the best for the lowest price. We get it, it's overwhelming. But before spending your hard earned $$ read on.
Both ourselves and our customers prefer mid drive motors over hub motor systems. Why you ask? It's actually quite simple and here are just a few of the reasons why;
Customer feedback:
- Feels more human like when riding.
- No delays when starting to pedal and when stopping.
- Take off is smoother and more precise. I feel in control of the bike.
- Bikes feel lighter and more balanced instead of all the weight at the rear of the bike.
- Much easier to ride up steeper inclines.
- Much longer range per charge.
- A cleaner handlebar area as there are significantly less cables (only addditional cable vs a regular bike is for the display unit).
- Overall build quality of the ebikes is significantly better. Nicer frames, less flexing, feels more solid and rides smoother.
- Knowing that the ebike is being produced by a major bicycle manufacturer and not just a small brand that imports from a 3rd party in Asia.
- Comfort and piece of mind knowing that the complete electrical system, not just the charger is UL certified.
- Comfort in knowing that service and parts will be available for years and years to come.
- Changing a flat tire is just like a regular bicycle as there are no power cables going to the motor in the rear wheel.
Our experience:
- More reliable, yes they really are. We see on average that hub motors start to have issues between 5000 - 10000km's.
- Much better human like cycling experience.
- More responsive due to changes in the advanced sensor technologies that monitor the riders pressure being applied to the pedals 1000 times per second!
- More natural riding sensation which is due to the direct transmission of power to the chain.
- Chains used on mid drive motors do not wear out quickly. Our experience is that proper ebike chains that are lubricated can last up to 5000 or 6000 km's. Customer can also choose ebikes with belt drives which will last typically 6 to 10 times longer than a chain!
- Hub motors require frequent spoke tensioning and wheel truing. As the motor is located in the rear wheel each time the motor provides power this puts additional stress on the spokes which cause them to come loose and break. This is quite often even mentioned in the warranties section for those bike brands. Read the small print in their manuals.
- Hub motor electric bicycles will typically have multiple intermittent issues though it's lifecycle. These repair costs can quickly add up and increase the total cost of ownership to be much higher than mid drive equipped ebikes.
- Spare parts for hub motor equipped ebikes are typically difficult if not impossible to obtain just a few short years after being produced making these products more disposable and less environmentally friendly.
