Bosch just launched the Hub Line, its first-ever hub motor after two decades of building only mid-drive systems, and I got to ride it in Europe last week, before most of North America even knew it existed. The short version: it is the smoothest, quietest, most invisible e-bike motor I have tested. The Hub Line puts 45 Nm of torque directly into the rear hub, weighs about 5 lbs, and disappears so completely into the wheel that the bike barely looks electric. Bikes built around it start arriving in 2027, and if my ride is any indication, it is going to change what people expect from a city e-bike.

What is the Bosch Hub Line?
The Hub Line is Bosch's first hub-mounted drive unit, built for city and commuter e-bikes rather than mountain or cargo use. Instead of sitting at the crank like Bosch's familiar Performance Line and Active Line motors, it is built into the hub of the rear wheel, about 4 inches across and roughly 2.3 kg (5 lbs) on its own.
On paper it is a compact, efficient commuter motor:
- 45 Nm of max torque, applied straight to the rear wheel
- Up to 400 W peak power, 250 W continuous (the legal pedelec limit in Europe)
- Fully decouples above 32 Kph in North America (25 km/h in Europe), so there is zero drag once you are cruising
- Pairs with the Bosch PowerTube 360 battery for a claimed range of over 80 Km's and even more range on some models with larger capacity Powertube batteries.
- Runs on Bosch's smart system, with over-the-air updates and app-based personalization
- For the North American market, a throttle is available, so riders can choose pure pedal assist, throttle-only, or a blend of both. For those that do not want a throttle this can be removed if preferred. Not that bikes supplied with a throttle cannot have a throttle added as an aftermarket accessory as the ebikes must be programed at the factory level to avoid tampering in regions where throttles are not legally permitted.
North American riders get a throttle. Unlike the European version, Hub Line bikes sold in North America will offer throttle assist alongside pedal assist, plus the option to blend both together, giving riders more flexibility for stop-and-go city riding.
What is it actually like to ride?
This is the part spec sheets cannot tell you, and it is the part that surprised me most. I personally spent time test riding the Hub Line in Europe last week, and I came away genuinely impressed with how responsive it felt. On paper the motor is rated at 45 Nm, but the power delivery felt like a lot more than that, closer to a 60 to 65 Nm motor in the way it actually moves you. That is a subjective impression, not a spec Bosch publishes, but it is a strong one, and it is great news for how this motor will feel on the road.
What stood out even more than the power was how the power arrives. It was smooth and the responsiveness was top notch. Compared to other hub motor systems I have tested, this one feels human like and civilized rather than jerky or grabby. That distinction matters more than most spec sheets let on: riders feel like they are in control of the bike, not the other way around. That is a genuinely impressive achievement for a hub motor, a category that has historically felt blunt compared to a good mid-drive.
Roll away from a stop and the Hub Line gives you a direct, immediate push, there is no lag while a mid-drive motor waits for cadence to build. Bosch's Auto mode reads your pedaling through sensor fusion and adjusts support without you touching a button, and it worked well enough on cobblestone streets and stop-start traffic that I mostly forgot it was there.
Above assist speed, the motor decouples completely, so there is none of the faint drag some hub motors have once you outpace the assist. You are just riding a normal bike again, only lighter feeling because the whole system, motor and battery combined, comes in under 11 lbs.
It is not trying to be a mountain bike motor, and Bosch is upfront that this is a city tool, not a climbing tool. But for flat and rolling urban riding, I will say it plainly: this is the best hub motor system I have ever ridden, and I would go further and say it is the best hub motor currently on the market, period.

Hub Line vs. mid-drive: what's really different
If you have shopped for an e-bike before, you already know the general trade-off between hub and mid-drive motors. Here is how the Hub Line specifically stacks up against Bosch's own mid-drive systems, like the Performance Line and Active Line families.
| Category | Bosch Hub Line | Bosch mid-drive (Performance/Active Line) |
|---|---|---|
| Motor location | Rear wheel hub | Crank/bottom bracket |
| Feel | Direct, immediate push at the wheel | Power runs through your gears, feels more gradual |
| Best for | Flat to rolling city riding, commuting | Hills, cargo loads, mixed terrain |
| Weight and look | Nearly invisible, cleaner frame silhouette | Visible motor housing at the cranks |
| Drivetrain wear | Lower, motor does not load the chain | Higher, chain and cassette see more strain |
| Above assist speed | Fully decoupled, no drag | Also decoupled, but motor mass still at the cranks |
If you want a bike that flies under the radar, feels light, and needs less mechanical upkeep for everyday city riding, the Hub Line makes a strong case. If you are hauling cargo or regularly climbing steep grades, a mid-drive is still the better tool.

Smart system, theft protection, and the eBike Flow app
The Hub Line runs on Bosch's smart system, which means it shares the same digital backbone as Bosch's other current motors: over-the-air updates, ride personalization, and navigation through the eBike Flow app. Bosch also built in tiered theft protection. Switch the bike off and the motor locks automatically at no extra cost. Add the optional ConnectModule and a Flow+ subscription, and you get GPS tracking and alarm alerts if the bike is moved.
Worth noting: Hub Line uses an adapted set of smart system features, not the full lineup. It is not compatible with Bosch eBike ABS, or a few of the more aggressive riding modes like Race and eMTB+. That is by design. This motor is built for commuting, not trail riding.

Is the Hub Line certified and legal to ride in Canada?
Yes. The Hub Line's full drive system, motor, battery, sensors, display, and cables, is certified to UL 2849, the e-bike electrical and fire safety standard, and the batteries themselves are separately certified to UL 2171. That is the same certification standard every Bosch-powered bike we sell is built to, so Hub Line is not cutting any corners to hit its smaller size and weight.
Top speed is 32 km/h (20 mph), which lines up with Canadian e-bike regulations and North American Class 1/2 rules. That is faster than the 25 km/h (15.5 mph) assist cutoff you will see quoted on Bosch's European pages, since the North American version is tuned to local law rather than the EU pedelec limit.
When can you actually buy one?
Not yet, and not for a while. Bosch has confirmed the Hub Line will appear on production bikes starting in Q1, 2027, from some of the brands we sell. Pricing for complete bikes has not been announced but will start from around $3499.00 Canadian dollars for a complete bike. In the meantime, if you ride a current Bosch smart system e-bike, you can already add the same ConnectModule theft protection and Kiox 300 display that Hub Line bikes will ship with.
